About Wind Publications

Wind Publications was founded in 1992 and is owned and run by Charlie G. Hughes.

Wind publishes books in several genres including fiction, biography, memoir, and history, with a special interest in poetry. Many of Wind's books are by authors from Kentucky and the Appalachian region.

Author Compensation

Beginning with the first book sold, Wind pays royalties consisting of 20% of sales.  Since most sales are wholesale, this is equivalent to approximately 10% of the retail price of the book. In addition, the author receives 10 copies of the book for personal use, plus additional copies to be used for promotional purposes or reviews. The author may also purchase copies of the book at a discounted price to be used for personal use or resale.

Book Design and Printing

Book design and editing are generally done in-house. One of our primary goals is to produce a book that the author can look to with pride, and we work closely with the author to produce an attractive, error-free product. All books have a high-gloss 4-color cover. Artwork for the book cover, as well as the interior text style and/or layout may be suggested by the author, however, of necessity, all final decisions on design rest with the publisher. We have never failed to come to agreement regarding design with any of our authors. Each of Wind's books is subjected to extensive editing in an effort to produce an error-free publication.

The manner in which Wind's books are printed is dictated by the market and projected sales. Most of Wind's books are produced utilizing print-on-demand (POD) technology by Lightning Source, a subsidiary of Ingram. For the end-user, POD print quality is indistinguishable from regular offset printing.

Print-on-demand is ideally suited for books having low sales volumes. It would be impossible financially for Wind to publish such low volume books (for example, most poetry books) if it were not for print-on-demand technology.  POD allows production of a book without the expensive minimum press run of 500-1000 books. The publisher's funds are therefore not tied up in inventory and are available for the printing of other books, or for other operating expenses. While many self publishers and vanity presses have been quick to adopt this new technology, many reputable, if not prestigious, publishing houses and university presses currently utilize POD for selected books.

Among the advantages of POD for the author is the fact that the book will not go out of print due to low volume sales.  It exists as a digital file awaiting printing. Thus, the expensive large-number reprintings characteristic of offset printing are avoided. High quality POD books potentially stay in print much longer than offset-printed books.

And you won't find POD books on the remainder table. We take satisfaction in the knowledge that POD contributes to environmentally responsible publishing.  Excess unsold books are not produced, and therefore not remaindered due to the expense of warehousing them.

Distribution and Marketing

Wind's books appear in Books in Print and are distributed by Ingram. They are also available through numerous on-line vendors such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Powell's, etc.

Books are also available from the publisher through the Wind Publications website

Wind sends both direct mail and e-mail announcements & news releases regarding new publications to mailing lists provided by the author and to other addresses in the Wind in-house database.

Wind provides the author with a minimum of 10 review or promotional copies.  Additional review copies are available from the publisher at no cost when requested by an editor.

Wind creates a unique web page for each book and/or author. Generally, these web pages are easily located via search engines by searching for the book title or author.

Wind will assist the author in scheduling readings and book signings, however, this is mostly left to the author as they are the person best equipped to manage their schedule.  Wind's input is dictated by the author's needs and availability.

Funding

Many small presses pay for the printing of their books through the collection of contest submission fees, reading fees, or advance sales generated or guaranteed by the author. Wind does not. Nor do we receive funds from government or other granting agencies. The payment for editing, printing, promotion, and other operating expenses is accomplished solely through income from book sales.

While we depend upon sales to fund the publishing enterprise, we will not print a book solely because it has commercial potential. Nor will we publish a book for pay or guaranteed author purchases. Our selection criteria are stringent, and they are our own, based upon our own aesthetic values and our judgment of the quality of the work. We are engaged in this endeavor because we appreciate the written word and want to put good work before the public.

We expect our authors to readily participate in the promotion of their book/s through book signings, readings, and other public events. Without the author's participation in such events we cannot afford to expend our time, effort, and meager funds in the production and promotion of a book. Authors who expect the publisher to do all the work in reaching the audience are being impractical and should seek another publisher.

"...the most popular [POD publishers] all use the same service to do our printing, and we all distribute our books through Ingram. So the quality of our books and the places to which we sell them are identical. The only real differences are the prices we charge, the quality of our customer service, and our business models."
